Sleep Board Review Test 1

6.  Which of the following HLAs are associated with patients with narcolepsy with cataplexy?

a.  HLA DQB1*0601

b.  HLA DQB1*0602

c.  HLA DQB1*0603

d.  HLA DQB1*0604

e.  HLA DQB1*0605

Answer: b HLA DQB1*0602

HLA DQB1*0602 is found in patients with narcolepsy with cataplexy in 85-100% of white patients, 90-95% of African American patients, and 100% of Japanese patients.  This HLA allele is found in a significant number of control subjects without narcolepsy (22% white, 34% African American, 12% Japenese).  Therefore it can support a diagnosis of narcolepsy but is not diagnostic of narcolepsy.
