26.  Which of the following medications suppresses REM sleep?

a.  modafinil

b.  caffeine

c.  venlafaxine

d.  zolpidem

e.  zaleplon

Answer: c.  venlafaxine

Venlafaxine is a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor which suppresses REM sleep.  Modafinil is a wake-promoting agent which does not suppress REM sleep.  Caffeine is a methlyxanthine which affects sleep as an adenosine receptor antagonist.  Zolpidem and zaleplon are both non-nezodiazepine benzodiazepine receptor agonists which do not suppress REM sleep when used at recommended doses.
