Sleep Board Review Test 1

2.  The secretion of which of the following is inhibited by sleep?

a.  TSH

b.  cortisol

c.  ACTH

d.  Insulin like growth factor

e.  none of the above

Answer: a.  TSH

TSH secretion is inhibited during sleep.  TSH levels are lowest during the day and increase to a maximum just prior to sleep onset.  Sleep deprivation will lead to an increase in TSH level (about double).  Arousals lead to transient increases in TSH levels.
